Update 24/11/2012: Please see my new Background Guide where I do a much better job at explaining perspective :) [link]

Update 23/8/2012: I'm really going to try to do an updated version of this and tie in the new things I've learnt. And do a better job at perspective. And everything else. I'm very grateful to everyone who has commented and faved, so I feel like I owe it to everyone to make a better version ^_^

In the mean time check out this awesome tutorial by someone who is far better at perspective than me :la: [link]

WARNING: Huge file ahead

Anyway, I decided to do a tutorial for how I did a Visual Novel background because I had a couple people ask me and there are very few visual novel tutorials out there.

I hope it will be kind of useful, though I am still very much learning how to do backgrounds and I am pretty much painting it how I paint everything... anyway, hope you like it ^^'

Edit: Thank you very much for your support everyone! I never though I would get a DD, especially not on this, but I am very happy, if a little overwhelmed. So thank you. I am very, very happy that I am being helpful -^^- I need to fix the couple spelling mistakes that are in it though (fo' shame). Wasn't expecting a couple thousand people to look at it though. I will go through and answer everyone's lovely comments soon.

DISCLAIMER: This is a how to/walkthrough, not really a tutorial. It is about my personal process on how I got to a specific point. It is not the only way to do stuff and I am very much still learning. I made this just to show a couple people from the visual novel community how I made this background because they asked. I am always pleased that people can find it useful and can take something from it. However there are also much better and more comprehensive tutorials out there by people who know much more then I do (especially about perspective). I recommend fox-orian's tutorials which I have been trying to follow. Somewhat unsuccessfully ^^'

Suggester's words: How to: Visual Novel Interior by *Auro-Cyanide is a really great and detailed interior background tutorial. It covers everything from perspective to shading! This will help even the most advanced artists. This is a great addition to the artistic community. ( Suggested by ~Vampy-note and Featured by `FantasyStock )

You actually chose the vanishing point according to how tall you expect the viewer to be when they enter the room, not "what looks good".

I also didn't say that. I said I chose an angle that looked good. I said the vanishing point reflected the height and angle that the room is viewed at. The horizontal line actually reflects the plane of focus of the viewer and can be unrelated to their height, such as it they were looking up or down, or if they were crouching or standing on top of something. It just depends on where they are looking :)

This is a very old guide. In the comments you can see the link to the newer one with a more correct view on perspective. I keep this one around because a lot of people still enjoyed it and I went into more detail about adjustment layers :)

THANK YOU for showing me how to do viewpoints.
I could never figure out how that worked.
Until today.
This isn't just useful for visual novels, it's useful for damn near everything so THANK YOU for solving the mystery!
